Boundaries & Balance & Goodbyes

There was a season of my life where I thought being needed meant I was valuable.

If I answered every call, showed up for every person, carried every burden, solved every crisis, and stretched myself thin enough to make everybody comfortable… then maybe I was doing something right.

But somewhere between exhaustion and disappointment, God started teaching me something hard:

Just because you can carry it doesn’t mean you were assigned to it.

As women, especially women who nurture, lead, create, mother, counsel, encourage, and serve, we often wear burnout like a badge of honor. We become everything to everybody until we no longer recognize ourselves underneath all the responsibilities.

And the dangerous part?

People will celebrate your sacrifice when in reality they are watching you drown and can’t even see that you need a life vest.I had to learn that boundaries are not walls built out of bitterness.Healthy boundaries are doors we close with the Holy Spirit as our guide.

Some people had unlimited access to me while contributing absolutely nothing to my peace.

Some conversations drained me more than they developed me.Some environments demanded versions of me that God never asked me to become.

Some expectations were never mine to carry in the first place.

And balance?

Balance wasn’t this perfect beautiful life where everything finally became easy. No. Balance became learning when to pour and when to rest. When to speak and when to be silent. When to help and when to let people grow through their own process.

Because overextending yourself can slowly turn purpose into resentment.

I learned that protecting your peace is not selfish.

Rest is not laziness.

Saying “no” is not cruelty.

And choosing yourself does not mean you stopped loving others.

Sometimes boundaries sound like:

“I can’t commit to that right now.”

“I need time to process.”

“I love you, but I disagree.”

“I’m unavailable for that conversation.”

“That behavior is no longer acceptable.”

“I need rest.” and

“Goodbye”

And honestly, some people will not like the healed version of you because the healed version of you requires accountability. The version of you with no boundaries was easier to use. But healing changes your posture.

You stop apologizing for needing space.

You stop shrinking to fit into rooms God outgrew for you.

You stop abandoning yourself to keep others comfortable.

This year taught me that balance is deeply spiritual.

Jesus rested.

Jesus withdrew.

Jesus set boundaries.

Jesus did not heal every single person in every city He visited, yet He still fulfilled His assignment completely.

Let that sink in.

You do not have to save everyone to be obedient to God.Some of us are drowning because we keep trying to carry people God told us to place in His hands.

Moses Was Drowning Trying to Carry Everybody

In Exodus 18, Moses tried carrying every responsibility alone until Jethro told him:

“What you are doing is not good… You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out.” Exodus 18:17-18 (NIV)

That scripture hits differently when you’ve spent years being strong for everybody else.

Some of us are exhausted not because God gave us too much… but because we keep picking up things He never assigned us to carry.

Everybody’s emergency is not your responsibility.

Everybody’s emotional instability is not your burden to fix.

Everybody’s access to you should not remain unlimited.

And maybe that’s where freedom begins.

Not in controlling everything.

Not in proving your worth through exhaustion.

Not in constantly performing strength.

But in finally understanding that peace is holy too.

So if you’re in a season where God is teaching you boundaries, don’t fight it.

The people meant for your life will learn how to honor them.

And the ones offended by your boundaries were often benefiting from your lack of them.

Choose peace anyway.

Choose healing anyway.

Choose balance anyway.

Because becoming whole sometimes looks less like adding more… and more like finally releasing what was never yours to carry while saying “Goodbye”
