Don't Miss It: When God Is Doing a New Thing

"See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?" — Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)

One of the most heartbreaking moments in Scripture is found in the story of Moses.

For years, Moses had watched God move in miraculous ways. When the Israelites needed water in the wilderness, God instructed Moses to strike a rock with his staff, and water flowed out (Exodus 17:6). The staff became a symbol of God's power and provision. Moses had seen God use it to part the Red Sea, perform signs and wonders, and lead a nation.

Then came another moment of need.

The people were thirsty again. They were complaining again. The situation looked familiar.

But this time, God's instructions were different.

Instead of telling Moses to strike the rock, God told him to speak to it (Numbers 20:8).

The problem wasn't that Moses lacked faith.

The problem wasn't that he didn't know God.

The problem was that Moses responded to a familiar situation with an old instruction.

Instead of speaking to the rock, he struck it.

And while water still came out, Moses' disobedience cost him the opportunity to enter the Promised Land.

Think about that for a moment.

Moses wasn't punished because God failed to provide. He suffered consequences because he failed to recognize that God was doing something new.

The Danger of Yesterday's Instructions

Many of us are guilty of doing the same thing.

We become so familiar with how God moved in one season that we assume He will move the same way in the next.

We keep using old methods, old mindsets, old strategies, and old responses because they worked before.

But God is not limited to repeating Himself.

Sometimes the very thing that brought breakthrough in one season becomes the thing that hinders us in the next.

The relationship, ministry approach, business strategy, coping mechanism, or routine that was once God-ordained may not be what He is asking for today.

The question is not, "What did God say?"

The question is, "What is God saying now?"

Familiar Doesn't Mean Faithful

One of the greatest traps believers face is confusing familiarity with obedience.

Moses knew what God had done before.

But obedience requires listening for fresh instructions.

When God is doing a new thing, old habits can become a hindrance.

Old victories can become idols.

Old testimonies can keep us from seeing new miracles.

God never changes, but His instructions often do because our seasons change.

How to Recognize a New Thing

Stay close enough to God to hear His voice clearly.

Don't assume today's answer is yesterday's answer.

Remain teachable, even when you have experience.

Seek God's direction before acting on what worked before.

Be willing to release methods that no longer fit your current season.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Perhaps God is asking you to stop striking and start speaking.

Maybe you've been frustrated because the old method isn't producing the same results.

Maybe you've been trying to force a previous season to work in a place where God is calling you forward.

Don't miss your next because you're clinging to your last.

The same God who instructed Moses to strike the rock later instructed him to speak to it.

The miracle was never in the staff.

The miracle was always in obedience.

As God does a new thing in your life, don't just remember what He said then.

Lean in and listen for what He is saying now.

Don't become so attached to the method that you miss the Master. God is still moving—just make sure you're following His current instructions.
