Restored to Grow

"He (God) restores my soul..." Psalm 23:3

This passage of scripture invites us into a new world where old habits, mentalities, and ideologies must die. Our souls are comprised of 3 fundamental areas that will help us grow if healed or hinder our growth if it remains unchecked. Those 3 areas are our mind, will, and emotions. Each area is affected in some way when we encounter experiences that are joyful, difficult, and even traumatic. No matter the experience or situation, what matters most is our response and within that response lies levels of maturity or lack there of.

As we walk with God, abide in his word, and bare our souls before Him, layers of life are peeled away like an onion, one at a time. As these layers are gently removed, the Holy Spirit begins to reveal the unhealed/immature areas. The caveat to this maturation process is the willingness to be transparent and vulnerable; both require SUBMISSION and PERMISSION. Submitting comes with surrender and permission comes with trust. When we submit our soul unto God for restoration, we surrender our entire being to His subjection. When we give him permission to have his way, we are placing our faith in someone far greater than ourselves. He knows our brokenness and he knows how to piece us back together.

"O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me..." Psalm 139:1

Let's take a quick look at King David for instance. In his life he made good choices and other times he made very bad choices. Yes, he was man after God's heart, however; he had tendencies and habits that were ungodly. He had enemies, a dysfunctional family, slept with AND impregnated a married woman, AND had her husband killed. His responses and choices in his lifetime showed revealed areas of immaturity in his soul. With all his issues and mess he still chased after God. His response in Psalm 139 is how many of us should approach God for a daily soul check.

"Search me, O God, and know my heart, test me and know my thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you." Psalm 139:23-24

This week, take some time to journal the following and take note of God's response:

• Find a quiet space and remove all distractions (phones, tablets, TVs, people, etc)

• Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the unchecked or unhealed parts of your soul.

• As he reveals, open your heart to repentance.

• Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with righteous fruit (Galatians 5:22-23)

• Meditate on Romans 12:2 and Psalm 139

• Allow God to pave the way for continued healing.

We only grow or mature in Christ if we completely bare our souls to the one who knows us intimately. Being vulnerable is scary but it results in the most beautiful transformation.
